The Chairman of Waterhouse Consulting Group, Dr Waqar Azmi, OBE participated in a high-profile debate on Monday 21st September entitled 'Is peace more than the absence of conflict?', hosted by London Week of Peace.
Dr Azmi called for greater equality and tolerance. He said:
“Peace needs to be underpinned by an acceptance of our differences and through the tolerance of others. We should promote a society that allows everybody's voice to be heard, using debate to resolve conflict”.
London Week of Peace is an annual week of high profile events, initiatives and action to promote greater community cohesion, safety and peace across the capital from the 20th - 27th of September 2009.
The Peace Debate was held at the Millbank Tower, London. Dr Azmi spoke alongside panellists including Major General Tim Cross, the most senior UK officer in post-Iraq war planning, peace campaigner Jo Berry, who lost her father in IRA Brighton Bombing by Patrick Magee, Rod Jarman, Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Metropolitan Police and, Universal TV Presenter, Mohamed Hassan.
Dr Azmi, who is also Chairman of Public Affairs for MINAB (Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board) said: "When 7/7 happened, Muslims around the UK condemned the killing of innocents. Many were angered by the actions of the Al-Qaeda inspired elements that undermined the peaceful principles on which Islam is built. Moving forward we need to ensure that communities and families provide our young people with clear boundaries about what is and isn't acceptable behaviour. Only then can we ensure that young people aren't in danger of being drawn into gangs, criminality or radicalisation."
The event was chaired by playwright and director Kwame Kwei-Armah and recorded by the BBC.
